Comcast launches discounted Internet for needy families

Miami Dade School Board member Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall

Miami-Dade School officials, the Miami mayor, Comcast executives and other community leaders gathered at Phillis Wheatley Elementary in Overtown on Thursday to launch a program to bring discounted computers and Internet service to needy families.
“Broadband, fast Internet access for these kids is not just a luxury,” said Miami-Dade Superintendent Alberto Carvalho. “It is a moral imperative. It is an economic driver for their own personal success.”
Families who have a Miami-Dade public school student in the National Free Lunch program will qualify for Comcast’s Internet Essentials program. They can sign up for high-speed Internet service for $9.95 a month (plus taxes) and/or get a voucher to buy a computer for less than $150. Students who qualify will get an application when school starts.
