School district officials pledge action after students’ near tragedy

Brownsville Middle School Dejected by the gun violence near public school campuses, Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said he’s taking to the streets — literally — in hopes of highlighting the need to make urban neighborhoods safe for children. Carvalho announced that he and T. Willard Fair, Urban League president, will patrol a corner in Brownsville that neighbors say is notorious for shootings. They will monitor the intersection of Northwest 24th Avenue and 49th Street, near Brownsville Middle School.
